What is Deadpool's relationship with Wolverine

A humorous yet crude blend, creating an explosive mix. Analysing the poster, we ask: what is Deadpool’s relationship with Wolverine?

The film Deadpool & Wolverine brings together two iconic characters from the Marvel universe, Deadpool and Wolverine, played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman respectively. The film is directed by Shawn Levy, known for his ability to combine action and comedy. Audiences could see the film in cinemas from 26 July 2024. And on the Disney+ platform, the film appeared on 12 November 2024. The plot is based on a conflict that turns into an alliance. Deadpool, a sarcastic anti-hero with an unconventional sense of humour, teams up with Wolverine, a tenacious mutant with superhuman regenerative abilities. Together, they must join forces to defeat a common enemy.

Also attracting attention on the poster is a unique dog held by Deadpool. This humorous element brings a light-hearted tone to the dramatic image of the two heroes. Furthermore, Dogpool, styled as a superhero with glasses and a special outfit, embodies Deadpool’s absurd humour, which contrasts sharply with Wolverine’s seriousness. In reality, however, he is the female Peggy, dubbed the ugliest dog by the British. Interestingly, she has her own Instagram account, which is followed by more than a million people. Above all, we will be inquiring: what is Deadpool’s relationship with Wolverine?

Denotative analysis

Denotation is the description of the most basic elements of the poster, without reference to symbolic meanings. In the poster we see the two main characters: Deadpool and Wolverine. Deadpool has a distinctive red costume, covering his face completely, while Wolverine has a yellow costume with claws extending from his hands. Both characters have serious expressions on their faces, with Deadpool holding a small dog dressed in a humorous outfit that resembles a superhero costume. Above them is the inscription ‘Marvel Studios Deadpool & Wolverine’, indicating the official origin and title of the film.

Connotative analysis. In search of answer: what is Deadpool’s relationship with Wolverine?

Connotation considers cultural and symbolic meanings that go beyond basic description. The characters of Deadpool and Wolverine represent contrasting hero archetypes. Deadpool is an anti-hero, characterised by black humour and cynicism, while Wolverine symbolises a more serious, solitary warrior with a stern approach. The dog in a superhero costume can be seen as a symbol of irony and absurdity.

The relationship between Deadpool and Wolverine is complex and multi-layered. In the comics and films, their relationship is often marked by tension and rivalry, but Deadpool simultaneously holds Wolverine in a kind of appreciation and fascination. The presence of both characters in the poster suggests both their common traits (such as their ability to regenerate) and their differences, which make for a dynamic duo. Deadpool, holding a dog, emphasises his unconventional approach and lack of seriousness, which contrasts with Wolverine’s stern image.

Commutation test

The commutation test involves replacing one element with another to see how it affects the meaning of the whole. We can imagine Deadpool holding a gun instead of a dog – such a change would affect the perception of the poster, giving it a more aggressive tone. The presence of the dog softens Deadpool’s image and emphasises his humorous, unconventional character. Also, if Wolverine had a smile instead of a serious expression on his face, then the dynamic between the characters would be less contrasting and the poster could suggest a more comedic relationship between them.

What is Deadpool’s relationship with Wolverine? Myth analysis

In the context of the mythos, Deadpool and Wolverine can be seen as modern incarnations of the trickster and warrior archetypes. Specifically, Deadpool, being the trickster, brings chaos, breaks conventions, and challenges accepted superhero norms. On the other hand, Wolverine, as the warrior, represents rawness, honour, and uncompromisingness. Moreover, the poster refers to the myth of the non-obvious alliance of two heroes with disparate characters. They must join forces in the face of a common threat. Ultimately, their relationship in the Marvel universe acts as a catharsis; through conflict and cooperation, the heroes learn each other’s new perspectives and values.

In ancient mythologies, one can find similar pairs of heroes who are very different in character and values. For instance, Heracles and Odysseus are two very distinct characters in Greek mythology. Specifically, Heracles (Hercules) is the archetype of the strongman, full of primitive strength and determination. He is known for his brutal and direct solutions. Moreover, his main tool is physical power, and he typically solves challenges with violence. Odysseus, on the other hand, represents cunning and intellect. Instead of force, he uses deception, diplomacy and strategy. Their approaches to challenges are quite different, and if they had to work together, there would probably be conflict. However, an effective synergy could emerge from such a relationship.
